Ultraviolet and optical flares on Gl 866

چکیده

We present simultaneous ultraviolet and optical observations of five flares on the very late type M dwarf Gl 866 (dM5.5e). A procedure to estimate the physical parameters of the flaring plasma has been developed using a simplified model of the flare and a comparison of observed and computed Balmer decrements. With this procedure we have determined the optical thickness, electron temperature and electron density of the flaring plasma at flare maximum for three spectroscopically observed flares. The three spectroscopically observed flares cover up to 5 percent of the stellar surface and have areas similar to solar flares.

Accurate masses of very low mass stars : II The very low mass triple system Gl 866 ⋆

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Accurate masses of very low mass stars: II The very low mass triple system Gl 866 Abstract. We present very accurate orbital parameters and mass measurements (2.4% accuracy) for the well known very low mass triple system Gl 866. We obtain first orbital elements for the short-period orbit and greatly improve the long period orbit. All three stars have masses close to 0...

High energy neutrino flashes from far-ultraviolet and x-ray flares in gamma-ray bursts.

The recent observations of bright optical and x-ray flares by the Swift satellite suggest these are produced by the late activities of the central engine. We study the neutrino emission from far-ultraviolet and x-ray flares under the late internal shock model. We show that the efficiency of pion production in the highest energy is comparable to or higher than the unity, and the contribution fro...

Sub-GeV flashes in γ−ray burst afterglows as probes of underlying bright far-ultraviolet flares

Bright optical and X-ray flares have been observed in many Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) afterglows. These flares have been attributed to late activity of the central engine. In most cases the peak energy is not known and it is possible and even likely that there is a significant far-ultraviolet component. These far-ultraviolet photons escape our detection because they are absorbed by the neutral hydro...

A major optical flare on the recently discovered X - ray active dMe star G 102 - 21

During the course of UBV photoelectric measurements made at the Catania Astrophysical Observatory we have observed an unusually intense optical flare on the nearby M dwarf G 102-21, the optical counterpart of a strong X-ray source recently detected by ROSAT. The amplitude of the magnitude increase (∆U ∼ 7.3 mag) and the total energy release in the UBV bands (E UBV ∼ (1.4 ± 0.3) × 10 35 erg) put...
